The European Hernia Society has a new President

Prof. V. Schumpelick President of the EHS

The EHS now has a new president after the fascinating and devoted surgeon Enrico Mandala, who was the president of the EHS since 2o10, finished his presidency routinely after three years.

It was a very successful period with international activities around the world and ended with the fruitful European congress in Gdansk. During that impressive, high ranking cultural and scientific meeting of Marciej Smietanski I was elected as President of the EHS to continue Mandalas successful work.

With the support of a fresh and partially rejuvenated board it will be an honor and pleasure to guide the old lady GREPA, now named EHS, to a bright future of internationality, science, quality control, certification and technical perfection. The future must develop a European hernia school under the name of EHS with standardized technique all over Europe, demonstrated in teaching courses, videos , photographs and drawings, already started by Salvatore Morales Conde and numerous coworkers. There will be educational courses and workshops in different European countries as for example already started with the very successful “Hernia kompakt” during the Berliner and Hamburger Hernientage of Ralph Lorenz, Bernd Stechenmesser and Wolfgang Reinpold.

Another important aim is to create an affordable unified certification of hernia surgeons and centers in Europe and to start an international registry, as already initiated by Filip Muysoms and Ferdinand Köckerling. The worldwide accepted international journal HERNIA with its increasing number of RCT´s in publication, guided by Marc Miserez and me as the European chief editors, must be the scientific and clinical basis of modern hernia surgery. New and simultaneous old fields of activity are biochemical studies on the hernia disease by Uwe Klinge and the stem cell treatment for the collagen defects. Also the future of the synthetic and biological meshes has to be analyzed and clarified.

More international activities will be directed towards cooperation with the APHS that should be accepted as a full member in the joined meeting of the EHS an AHS in Milano 2015, maybe other global hernia societies will follow later, we have to be open for them to be at least connected by the HERNIA journal. The future of the EHS looks very demanding and bright and if we all work together to make the European Hernia Society to a society of all hernia surgeons in a unified Europe without limits or borders, the future will be on our side.
